Celebrities Who’ve Owned Exotic Pets

From snakes to llamas to wallaroos, these famous folks have had some interesting pets.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more people own exotic or specialty pets now than they ever have. Celebrities are no exception. In fact, it seems that stars have had unique, fascinating and sometimes mind-boggling animals in their homes long before average families started adopting ferrets, lizards or other less traditional pets.

Here are some of the cute and crazy creatures that have belonged to famous people.

Audrey Hepburn and Her Fawn

In 1959, Audrey Hepburn was preparing for her role in the film “Green Mansions” directed by her husband, Mel Ferrer. The actress was to interact with a young deer in the film, so the animal trainer suggested she take the fawn home to build a relationship. Hepburn became quite attached to the little deer, which was named Pippin.

Beyonce and Her Snake

When she was younger, Beyonce and her cousin were roommates. Her cousin had a snake named Fendi that lived with them, and Queen Bey had a fondness for Fendi, too. Beyonce slept and watched television with the snake. However, her father was afraid of it and made the girls find a new home for Fendi.

Charlie Sheen and His Chinese Water Dragon

The sometimes troubled actor has had several pets, including a Chinese water dragon and a bearded dragon. Unfortunately, both reptiles seem to have met untimely deaths. The bearded dragon fell into a swimming pool and drowned, while the water dragon reportedly died from inadequate care.

Cheryl Hines and Her Emu

Actress Cheryl Hines and her family have had several pets in their home, including her daughter’s emu, which her husband gave their daughter as a gift. Although it was intended as an outdoor animal, the dog would leave the door open and the emu would come inside. Apparently, the family no longer owns the emu, as she told James Corben that her husband gave it to an emu farm as a gift to his wife.

Chris Brown and His Capuchin Monkey

Singer Chris Brown purchased a baby monkey as a Christmas gift for his daughter. However, the present has caused Brown some legal troubles. After being alerted following a social media post, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife investigated and discovered that Brown did not have a permit for the monkey. Government officials have since seized the animal.

David Beckham and His Micro Pigs

What do you buy a world-famous soccer player who has it all? If you are Victoria Beckham and that man is your husband, you buy him tiny pigs. In 2009, Mrs. Beckham gave her spouse a pair of 9-inch tall, 13-pound micro pigs for Christmas. They named the piglets Pinky and Perky.

Ice T and His Baby Sharks

Back in 1994, the musician and actor renovated his Hollywood home. The home had a four-room recording studio that featured an 8-foot-by-3-foot baby shark tank. His family still has a fondness for the creatures, and his wife and daughter swam with sharks on a 2018 vacation to the Bahamas.

Justin Bieber and His Capuchin Monkey

A family friend gave the singer a capuchin monkey as a birthday gift. Bieber named the pet OG Mally and took it everywhere with him. Unfortunately, when he took it to Munich in 2013, German officials seized the monkey. It now resides in a German zoo.

Kim Kardashian and Her Chimpanzee

In 2009, Kim Kardashian posted photos of her new pet on her website. The baby chimpanzee, named Suzy, caused quite a stir as a Connecticut woman had been mauled by a pet chimp the same week. Kardashian later stated that she had only rented the chimp as a prank on her mother.

Kirstie Alley and Her Lemurs

Kirstie Alley doesn’t just have one exotic pet. She has more than one dozen. In 2014, the actress told People Magazine that she shared her home with 14 pet ring-tailed lemurs.

Leonardo DiCaprio and His Tortoise

In 2010, Leonardo DiCaprio attended the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show in Anaheim, California. Although one of his associates asked most of the questions, DiCaprio stepped in and paid $400 for a 45-pound, 7-year-old African spurred tortoise. The animals can live as long as 200 years!

Martha Stewart and Her Chinchillas

The queen of living well has a well-known love of animals. Stewart has had at least 15 pet chinchillas over the years, and she has some recommendations for being a good pet parent to a chinchilla.

“They scare easily, so they respond best to being held in a calm manner,” she says on her website.

Megan Fox and Her Pig

This actress has had her share of unique creatures over the years. Her menagerie has included a Bengal cat, a parrot, a squirrel and a pig. She named the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig Piggy Smalls.

Melanie Griffith and Her Lion

When Melanie Griffith was a teen, her mother (actress Tippi Hedren) and stepfather brought home a male lion as research for a film about big cats. The lion, named Neil, was the first in a string of big cats the family adopted. She’s now a critic of keeping them as pets, and Griffith and Hedren have become dedicated animal advocates. Hedren even started a big cat sanctuary in California.

Michael Jackson and His Chimpanzee

The King of Pop owned an array of animals throughout his lifetime. Perhaps the most famous was his chimpanzee, Bubbles. Jackson rescued Bubbles from a Texas cancer research clinic in 1985, and the chimp slept in a crib in the singer’s bedroom. Bubbles spent enough time at Jackson’s side that he had his own place in the spotlight for a time. Celebrity artist Jeff Koons even made four editions of this statue of Jackson and Bubbles, which was controversial for how it portrayed Jackson.

Mike Tyson and His Tigers

When Mike Tyson was in prison, he was talking to his car dealer, who mentioned he could trade vehicles for almost anything, such as tigers. The idea struck the young heavyweight boxing champion as cool. He purchased white Bengal tiger cubs for a reported $70,000.

Mike Tyson and His Pigeons

The boxer makes the list twice because he has two interesting animal stories. In 2009, Tyson’s young daughter died in a tragic accident. His pain turned to rage, and Tyson decided to turn his life around rather than giving in to his anger. As a child, he kept pigeons, and he decided to return to his love for the birds after his daughter’s death, saying he found solace in just sitting with his pigeons in their coop.

Nicolas Cage and His Cobras

Nicolas Cage has been the owner of some very unusual pets. Some of the animals he has owned include an octopus, a shark and a crocodile. Perhaps the most interesting pets the actor has had are a pair of albino king cobras.

Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and Their Alpacas

Kidman and Urban were married in 2006, have two children together and a farm in Tennessee that several fluffy alpacas call home. Kidman loves the pets, “Because they’re pretty. They have the long lashes,” she told People Magazine.

Reese Witherspoon and Her Donkeys

In 2010, Reese Witherspoon’s family grew by two when they added a pair of miniature donkeys to their list of pets. They already owned pigs, goats, chickens, dogs and a horse. The “donks” are named Honky and Tonky.

Vanilla Ice and His Wallaroo

In 2004, rapper and house-flipper Rob Van Winkle, also known as Vanilla Ice, reported his pet wallaroo was missing. Apparently, the animal escaped from the family’s backyard. After paying a fine, Van Winkle was reunited with the 60-pound animal named Bucky Buckaroo.

Jennifer Garner and Her Chicken

Actress and mom of three Jennifer Garner has had several chickens through the years. She posted many pictures of her chicken Regina George on social media, including this shot of Garner walking the bird on a leash. Sadly, Regina died of natural causes in 2018.

Hayden Panettiere and Her Corn Snakes

The actress and activist loves all sorts of animals, but she has a special place in her heart for the cold-blooded variety. In 2012, Panettiere tweeted a shot of her family’s newest pets. Corn snakes rarely bite and reportedly make good pets.

Hugh Hefner and His Llama

Hugh Hefner moved into the Playboy Mansion in 1971. He had a zoo license, which allowed Hefner to keep a variety of animals throughout the years, such as monkeys and exotic birds. He also owned a llama early on, as shown in a tweet Hef posted in 2014.

Nicole Richie and Her Chickens

Lionel Richie’s daughter is another chicken-lover to make the list. The fashion designer, actress and socialite asked her husband for several of the birds, who have posed with her in magazines and on social media. In fact, the chickens have become famous enough to get their own photo shoots. In an Instagram post with the chickens, she wrote, “When you crash your chickens @archdigest coop photo shoot.”

Paris Hilton and Her Kinkajou

Heiress Paris Hilton once owned a pet kinkajou named Baby Luv. In 2006, the raccoon-like animal bit Hilton when they were playing. She went to the hospital, where they treated the bite by cleaning it and giving her a tetanus shot.

Miley Cyrus and Her Pig

Cyrus a well-known animal lover and vegan. She has played pet-mom to dogs and cats galore. She has even had a pet blowfish. But one of her dearest animals is her pig, who was originally called Bubba Sue but was later renamed, simply, Pig.

Chris Hemsworth, Elsa Pataky and Their Pig

Celebrity couple Elsa Pataky and Chris Hemsworth purchased a piglet in 2016. Pataky announced on Instagram that they had named the pig Tina. Along with Tina, the family, which includes one daughter and twin sons, lives in Byron Bay, Australia.

Dan Bilzerian and His Goat

Professional poker player Dan Bilzerian has made enough money to buy pretty much whatever he wants. Apparently, one of those things is a goat. Bilzerian’s pet goat, Zeus, makes numerous appearances on the multi-millionaire’s social media pages.

Tori Spelling and Her Chickens

Some people have backyard chickens. Others, such as Tori Spelling, have “pocket chickens.” The actress told Us Weekly that she enjoyed dressing her silkie bantam, Coco, and taking her on outings.
